MIRIAM FISHER Headstone Unveiling Early on the morning of September 17, 2010, Miriam died. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the inexplicable successive death of the motor neurons in her central nervous system inexorably robbed her of her strength, her ability to walk, then to talk, to swallow, and finally to breathe. She faced those fulfilled yet terrible twenty four months with unfailing, uncomplaining courage. Miriam was an accomplished registered nurse, working in both Victoria acute hospitals, as well as teaching nursing in Camosun College. She was known then as Colleen Gibbings (nee Hunter). She first changed Colleen to Miriam and then a little later (through marriage) to Miriam Fisher. Miriam was a founder of the Jewish Community Centre and a cornerstone of Congregation Emanu-El synagogue. Miriam's character foretold her many accomplishments. She was a person of intelligence and patience. She accumulated a number of Masters degrees in diverse subjects during her career. She was interested in people, recognized both need and talent and knew that everyone deserved to be treated with honour and respect. She was clear and passionate about her Judaism. She loved to learn and she honoured those who taught. Miriam is greatly missed by those who loved her. Her memory is indeed a blessing to her partner and husband of thirty years, Dr. Stanley Fisher, her stepchildren Zev, Lara and Rachel, and her grandchildren Tal, Jordan, Elias and Jade. On Sunday, September 18, 2011, her headstone was unveiled in a ceremony for family and friends at Congregation Emanu-El Cemetery, Cedar Hill Road, Victoria.
